Brooklyn based cartoonist Mindy Indy is creating a series of graphic novellas called “AER HEAD.” The idea for this comic series budded in college at the University of Michigan School of Art & Design, where she focused in cartooning and animation. When her sister moved to San Diego, she was fascinated by the landscape and decided to make it the setting for AER HEAD.
Mindy hopes to inspire other artists, just like how she was inspired as a kid by comics and animation. Her favorite artist was Rumiko Takahashi, whose comic formula always included humor, action, and a quirky character cast. Mindy loves creating situational humor for her characters. Her early influences were from Japanese manga and anime, but after years of portrait illustration, Mindy’s style incorporates more realistic character features as well.
Mindy’s biggest achievements are recently completing AER HEAD #1, the debut 50-page comic issue. She successfully Kickstarted it and printed 200 copies (available for sale on this site). In 2020/21 she illustrated Our Sunday Visitor’s “God’s Superheroes: Amazing Catholic Women” and “Amazing Catholic Men,” totaling 74 illustrations, released in February 2022. Mindy has also taught comic creation at Harlem Children’s Zone for two years. Mindy has survived as a freelance artist in NYC since 2010: designing for non-profits, exhibiting in comic conventions like New York Comic Con, creating a web comic for 7 years called “No Tears: Life With FD,” making custom comics for clients, and establishing a solid Patreon fanbase. Currently she is a resident of Transform, a Christian Artist Residency.
